Counter Attack Guide

Counter attack is one of the most effective tactical approaches in Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters. When the opponent overcommits forwards, a well-timed turnover creates a two-on-three or three-on-two situation that the Chain System was built to exploit. The game launched on 27 August 2026 in Japan and 28 August 2026 worldwide, including Steam. This page covers when to counter, how to transition fast, and which characters excel in the counter attack role.

Read this alongside the Match Strategy guide, the Chain System page, and the Controls reference for the button inputs that execute quick transitions.

Why counter attack works in World Fighters

The Chain System rewards momentum. A successful counter attack builds chain level faster than methodical possession because the opponent’s markers are out of position. When the opposing team commits three or four players to attack, the space behind their midfield is real. A Super Pass into that space creates a transition moment that possession football cannot match.

Super Moves amplify the counter. A Super Dribble surge down the wing or a Super Pass that freezes the last defender changes the math of every counter. The gauge spent on a counter attack shot is often more valuable than the same gauge spent in a slow build-up.

When to sit back and wait

Counter attack requires patience. The wrong moment to transition is when the opponent is still organized. Watch for these signals:

The overcommitted midfield: When the opponent pushes both wingers forward and the defensive midfielder is out of position, the space behind is exploitable. Do not rush the turnover — wait until the pass is intercepted or the dribble is contained.

The set piece aftermath: After a corner or free kick, the opponent’s defense is often scattered. A quick clearance and immediate Super Pass can catch them before they reorganize.

The second-half fatigue window: Opponents who have been pressing high for 60 minutes are slower to recover. A turnover in minute 65 against a pressing team creates better counter opportunities than the same turnover in minute 15.

Keeper on an island: When the opponent’s keeper is off his line and the ball is loose, a long-range Super Shot or even a normal shot can force a quick counter before the defense tracks back.

How to execute a fast transition

The transition from defense to attack happens in seconds. The correct inputs and decision-making sequence:

Step 1 — Win the ball cleanly. A Super Tackle that knocks the ball to a teammate is better than a Super Tackle that pins the opponent but leaves the ball in no-man’s land. If the ball is loose, use a controlled tackle that keeps it in front of you.

Step 2 — First pass choice defines the counter. A Super Pass into the space behind the opponent’s midfield is the fastest counter. A normal pass to a winger who is already sprinting forward maintains momentum. A backward pass resets and kills the counter.

Step 3 — Chain during the transition. Every successful dribble or pass during the counter raises chain level. Do not stop the counter to wait for gauge to fill — let the chain build and spend it when the shot opportunity arrives.

Step 4 — Shot or cross at the right moment. A counter shot from outside the box is only worth taking if the keeper is off his line or the chain is above 7. A cross to a teammate making a late run is often the better choice against a reorganizing defense.

Characters built for counter attack

Not every character is equally effective on the counter. The ones who excel:

Natureza is the counter attacker’s textbook. Super Dribble plus the chain system creates the fastest transitions in the game. Brazil’s offensive language is built around exactly this moment.

Juan Diaz carries the Maradona-coded Super Dribble identity. Argentina plays a tighter defensive shape, but Diaz in space is one of the game’s most dangerous counter assets.

Tsubasa Ozora transitions through the middle with Drive Shot as the counter-finish. His Super Pass also sets up teammates on the counter without requiring him to be the one who finishes.

Stefan Levin and Sweden use the Viking Scheme to position fast wingers who are already sprinting when the turnover happens. Levin Shoot as a counter-finish from the wing is a distinct threat.

Hyuga-adjacent forwards like Shun Nitta use raw speed to beat recovering defenders on the counter. A Super Shot from a fast transition is harder for keepers to read than the same shot from a slow build-up.

Defending against counter attacks

If your opponent is sitting back and waiting for you to overcommit, the defensive response is discipline:

Keep two defenders back at all times. Even when chasing a goal, leave a center-back and a full-back in position. The moment you push both center-backs forward, the counter is live.

Do not sprint to win the ball in midfield. A failed press in midfield leaves the entire back four exposed. Contain first, tackle when the opponent is in front of your defensive line.

Use Super Block on the counter. When the opponent breaks, Super Block the first shot. It slows the counter enough for your teammates to recover.

Track the fast wingers. In the opponent’s formation screen before kickoff, identify which players have the speed to exploit space behind your midfield. Assign the defender with the best Super Tackle to contain them.

Counter attack and game modes

Counter attack is most effective in Story mode against teams that AI-controls with aggressive attacking patterns. The qualifier path — Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan — features AI that overcommits.

In Versus mode, human opponents are less predictable. Some players sit back intentionally and counter. Others press high and force you to counter against them. Read the opponent’s formation at the start of the match and adjust your defensive posture accordingly.

For ranked online play, counter attack is a valid strategy but requires the same practice as any other approach. Use the Practice mode to rehearse the transition inputs, then test in local split-screen before taking counter attacks online.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for launch week on PS5, Xbox, Switch, and Steam.

What is the best moment to counter attack in Captain Tsubasa 2?

Counter when the opponent overcommits midfielders or wingers forward, when they are reorganizing after a set piece, or when they show fatigue in the second half. A clean turnover in these moments creates the best transition opportunities.

How do I execute a fast transition?

Win the ball cleanly, make the first pass count (Super Pass into space is fastest), build chain during the transition, then shoot or cross at the right moment. Do not stop to fill the gauge — let chain build and spend it when the shot arrives.

Which characters are best for counter attack?

Natureza is built for counter attacks with Super Dribble. Juan Diaz carries Maradona-coded dribbling. Tsubasa transitions through the middle with Drive Shot. Sweden's Levin and fast wingers exploit space behind midfield.

How do I defend against counter attacks?

Keep two defenders back at all times, do not sprint to win the ball in midfield, use Super Block on the counter to slow the transition, and track fast wingers who can exploit space behind your midfield.

Does counter attack work in Versus mode against human opponents?

Yes, but human opponents are less predictable than AI. Read their formation at the start of the match and adjust your defensive posture. Some players sit back intentionally and counter; others press high and force you to counter against them.

How does the Chain System interact with counter attacks?

Every successful action during a counter — dribbles, passes, tackles — raises chain level. Higher chain means faster charge times and more powerful shots. The counter attack is one of the fastest ways to build chain because the opponent's markers are out of position.
